The Discovery crew that went aloft in April 1991 knew they'd have plenty to look at since they flew during a geomagnetic maximum, when elevated solar activity sends charged particles streaming toward Earth. This gave rise to the spectacular Aurora Australis that they photographed while looking aft over the ship's open cargo bay and tail fin.
