African-American Soldiers in the Civil War

A photograph from 1863 shows Fannie Virginia Casseopia Lawrence, second from right, a slave child who was "redeemed" in Virginia and taken to New York City, where she was baptized in Brooklyn at Plymouth Church by Henry Ward Beecher. The photograph was taken by the Kellogg Brothers of Hartford, Conn., in 1863.
