The newly named Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh wave from a balcony to the crowds at the gates of Buckingham Palace after the coronation on June 2, 1953. Norman Hartnell designed Elizabeth's coronation gown; she had specifically requested that it be embroidered with the national flowers of each Commonwealth country.
