Pearl Harbor Through the Eyes of a LIFE Photographer

Landry's photos, shot after the attacks, were some of the first images to come out of Pearl Harbor for TIME and LIFE magazines; many publishers scrambled to cover the Sunday-morning attacks, using grainy photos from press wires that in many cases were taken by service members and amateur photographers. Some publications, including TIME, worked through Sunday night to add the news to issues that had already been sent to print. Others were less fortunate; Look magazine, for example, planned its issues in advance and was unable to cover Pearl Harbor for several weeks. This photo by Landry shows the sinking of the U.S.S. Oklahoma after the attacks on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
