Rounding The Bases
Yogi Berra (wearing number 8) congratulates Maris at home plate, as he finishes rounding the bases after hitting his 61st home run on October 1, 1961. His record would stand for 37 years, three years longer than Babe Ruth's own record, until 1998. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa raced to beat Maris' record, ending that with 70 home runs and 66 home runs, respectively, and Barry Bonds set a new record in 2001 with 73 home runs. Those records remain contested, however official they may be; Bonds and McGwire have been investigated for their usage of steroids, and Maris' record has become the Yankee milestone that many baseball fans now seek to preserve.
