Maris celebrates in the clubhouse with the media after a game at Yankee Stadium in 1961. Though time spent with Mantle and other teammates, as well as the night of his historic feat were highlights for Maris, the stress became more intense as the season neared its end; it has often been recalled that Maris became withdrawn and started losing his hair in clumps due to the pressure from the media and those who opposed the record. At an all-star game he attended in 1980, he recalled the feelings, saying "They acted as though I was doing something wrong, poisoning the record books or something."
