Though the press often pitted them against each other in the race to break Babe Ruth's record, the two had much in common; they shared an apartment in Queens, as well as a midwestern background and a resistance to adopting the glamorous, press-friendly lifestyle that many Yankees had lived in years past. Throughout the 1961 season the two remained friends, and when Mantle was hospitalized with an injury and forced to sit out the last weeks of the season, he rooted for Maris from his hospital bed.
