Whether or not the model for Rembrandt's Christ was indeed Jewish, we know that he frequently painted likenesses of Jews (or of Gentiles in Jewish costume). In the 17th century many Jews flocked to the Netherlands to escape persecution elsewhere on the Continent, especially Spain and Eastern Europe.
