The artifacts that Bingham excavated after his discovery went to Yale University, where they remained for more than nine decades. In recent years, Peru has fought aggressively to gain the return of the artifacts. The two parties agreed to give legal title to Peru in 2007, but that deal fell apart when they could not agree on the number of objects to be returned. A shipment of some items did make it to Lima, where they were displayed at the government palace in 2011, above.
