The yard has a long history of fighting terrorism, having gained deep experience in its efforts to stem the activities of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, which, in the 1970s, carried out numerous attacks in northern Ireland and the United Kingdom. This photo shows fire and smoke from a car bomb explosion set near Great Scotland Yard, on March 8, 1973, an IRA attack that killed on person and injured dozens of others.
