A Photo History of the Space Shuttle Program
Cape Canaveral, Florida, July 21, 2011
Space Shuttle Atlantis lands at Kennedy Space Center on July 21, 2011, in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The touchdown ended the final mission of NASA's 30-year-long shuttle program, and the three remaining Space Shuttles will be transferred to museums across the country. Atlantis will be displayed at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida; Discovery will be displayed at the Smithsonian's National Air And Space Museum; and the Endeavour will be displayed at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, California. To make room for Space Shuttle Discovery, the Enterprise atmospheric test orbiter, which was never fitted with engines capable of space flight, will be moved to a newly-constructed hangar at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City.
