Falk was reportedly cast in his defining role as Columbo after both Bing Crosby and Lee J. Cobb turned down the role. The hit series ran from 1968 until 2003 as a TV show and as a series of television movies. Falk reportedly rejected the fashionable clothes laid out for him on set, instead selecting the character's trademark trench coat — one of his own — and rumpled suit.
