The Bombing of the U.S.S. Cole
On Oct. 12, 2000, the U.S.S. Cole, an American destroyer, was the target of a suicide bombing while in waters off the coast of Yemen; 17 sailors were killed and 40 wounded. Al-Qaeda took responsibility for the attack, and a recruitment video came to light only three months before 9/11 in which bin Laden bragged of his group's involvement. On April 20, 2011, charges were refiled by military prosecutors against Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, who was charged with planning the bombing.
