"French Mary"
An immigrant from France, Mary Tebe was a vivandière with the 114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Vivandières had a long history in European armies, in which soldiers' wives acted as sutlers (traveling vendors who sold the essentials of daily life), carried water and tended the wounded. Tebe, who carries a canteen and a holstered pistol in the photo above, saw action at Gettysburg and 11 other battles.
