Remembering the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
AP
Tragedy Strikes
On March 25, 1911, a fire broke out at the Triangle Factory. Fueled by
hundreds of pounds of highly flammable cotton and tissue scraps, the
blaze ripped through the building's top three floors; the workers,
trapped inside by locked doors, were unable to escape. Matters were made worse by the inadequacy of the equipment of the firemen, whose ladders and hoses were unable to reach higher than the sixth floor.
