The unrest in Libya was inspired by successful uprisings in the country's North Africa neighbors Tunisia and Egypt, where angry demonstrators toppled two long-ruling regimes. In mid-February, Libyans streamed into the streets to protest the rule of Muammar Gaddafi, who has led Libya for more than 40 years. The demonstrators set fires in Green Square, where the Libyan leader regularly organizes military parades.
