Thursday/Friday, July 26/27, 2001: Overnight, lava from Etna crosses the road and passes in front of a restaurant. Europe's most active volcano is in eruption since 12 July 2001. The lava was closing in on the deserted Sapienza tourist center at an altitude of nearly 2,000-m (6,600 feet), and had flowed to within only 100 yards of built-up structures.
