With the picture of Spanish swimmer Xavier Torres, Bell decided that he wanted to challenge the classic sporting snap by showing the handicapped swimmer on the starting block. When he met Torres, Bell thought the swimmer's disability at birth was that he lacked half his arms. He noticed that Torres walked with a slight limp, but only realized the extent of his handicap when Torres took off his tracksuit trousers and artificial legs.
