Given the large, six-candidate field, and the deep ethnic fragmentation of the city, many doubted that Emanuel would be able to poll the 50%-plus one needed to win outright on election day Feb. 22. But even in the large African-American community (which might be inclined to vote for the leading black candidate, former U.S. Senator Carol Moseley Braun) Emanuel enjoys broad support. Said one voter, "He could pull strings to do the city good." Says another: "I voted for [Moseley Braun,] but it seems when we go with race, it doesn't do us any good. He's better qualified."
