Beginning on January 25, 2011, protesters calling for Mubarak to step down have occupied Cairo's Tahrir Square. In two speeches over the course of 18 days, Mubarak refused to resign, fueling the anger of the protesters, who organized further marches and demonstrations. Though the Egyptian military did not prevent them from occupying the square the protesters withstood assaults by groups who supported the government.
