True Grit
What were those devious brothers Joel and Ethan Coen up to when they remade the 1969 hit True Grit (for which John Wayne won his only Oscar), this time in a version more faithful to the Charles Portis novel? Just now they're up to a box-office take of about $140 million, nearly twice what their Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men grossed, and a gaudy 10 Academy nominations. Grit has clicked with audiences like no other Coen film, as has its novice leading lady, Hailee Steinfeld. Still, it's hard to see what major Oscar it might win — unless the top two contenders split the biopic vote and the Academy gives Best Picture to a period western for the first time since Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven won 18 years ago.
