Best Picture Nominees 2011
127 Hours
This hypervivid film, based on Aron Ralston's memoir about the five days he spent trapped in a mountain crevice and his daring, if grisly, escape, marks the reunion of Slumdog Millionaire's Oscar-winning trio: director Danny Boyle, screenwriter Simon Beaufoy and composer A.R. Rahman. (Beaufoy and Rahman both received nominations this time around too, along with star James Franco.) Though the subject is ostensibly inspiring, the film didn't quite connect with audiences or earn even a 30th of Slumdog's $378 million worldwide gross. Some viewers passed out from shock while watching the movie; more will faint, from surprise, if 127 Hours wins.
