Out There
Challenger orbits Earth during its second mission, June 1983. The cargo bay doors are open after the vehicle released two communications satellites. During this flight, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space. In later missions the shuttle would, among other firsts, carry the first African American into space (August 1983) and witness the first untethered spacewalk (February 1984).
