Inspired by the demonstrations in Tunisia that had forced the resignation of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, thousands of young Egyptians gathered in downtown Cairo on Police Day — a holiday normally dedicated to officers who had died fighting the British in a 1952 skirmish — to demand the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, who had ruled the country virtually uncontested for almost thirty years.
