The Most Notable Assassins in U.S. History
Carl A. Weiss, 1935
Carl A. Weiss killed Louisiana Senator Huey Price Long, Jr. Probably. Most likely. Maybe? Weiss a doctor from Baton Rouge and Long had some sort of altercation in the Louisiana State Capitol Building on September 8, 1935. Long was shot and his bodyguards immediately opened fire, hitting Weiss several dozen times; he died at the scene. Witnesses identified Weiss as the shooter, but police records and the murder weapon disappeared from official files in 1940. Rumors surrounded the assassination for years (was Weiss the real killer or had Long been the victim of a political hit-job?) so in 1991, the physician's body was exhumed and the case re-opened. What's the real story, then? "There was one assassin," said Louisiana state police lieutenant Donald Moreau, in a 1992 press conference. "That assassin was Dr. Carl A. Weiss." Guess that's settled.
