For most of its history, Cabrini-Green remained associated with crime. The complex endured constant gang violence and was more than once the site of particularly sensational crimes, like the 1997 "Girl X" case, which began when a nine-year-old girl was found raped, beaten and left for dead in a stairwell. Her assailant, it turned out, was not a gang member, but an ex-convict with a history of sexual assault.
