Wearing surgical masks, which became ubiquitous during the height of the SARS outbreak in spring, two young people embraced on a Hong Kong subway train. SARS originated in China's Guangdong province, but it was in Hong Kong that the world first learned of the deadly new respiratory disease. Before the outbreak subsided, 8,098 people had become infected, of whom 774 died
