Cast in Mud: Child Laborers
of Cairo

COLIN FINLAY / SABA

Finlay: These boys change oil, tires and heater hoses in a small garage. The mechanic who owns this shop has his back to the camera. His partner is on the left — you can see his left leg. The men sit around and bark out orders at these children. It was very humiliating to watch the men screaming at the kids. Of all the places I photographed for the child labor story, this was, without a doubt, the toughest because of the way these boys were treated.

Egyptian law forbids children under age 12 from working and children under 15 can work no more than six hours a day. Yet a government survey found 1.4 million children between the ages of six and 14 labor in Egypt.
