Cast in Mud: Child Laborers
of Cairo

COLIN FINLAY / SABA

Finlay: This is a small glass factory. You can see all the glass bottles in the background. The boy's responsibility is to heat the glass in preparation for the man to shape it into a bottle. The fumes were so intense that my lungs seized up immediately upon walking inside. You can tell just how smoky it was by the way the light looks coming in through the windows. Within ten minutes my lungs were burning. I couldn't imagine what this boy felt sitting so close to it.

When destitute parents offer their children's labor to repay a debt, the children are held in bonded labor, toiling up to 20 hours a day, seven days a week.
