Flanked here by British prime minister Winston Churchill and Soviet premier Joseph Stalin, Roosevelt wanted the landmark February 1945 Yalta conference to secure Soviet commitment to the United Nations and to the war against Japan. He succeeded, but at the cost of Eastern Europe, which came under communist control after Stalin ignored his promises to Roosevelt and Churchill to hold free elections in the occupied territories.
