A feminist and civil rights crusader, Eleanor Roosevelt was used as FDR's eyes, ears and social conscience, traveling the country to investigate living conditions and reporting back directly to the Oval Office. Derided by critics as a left-wing busybody, Eleanor nevertheless demonstrated an effectiveness at setting New Deal policies in motion that was "as devastating as General Patton's tanks," according to the President's secretary, Grace Tully.
