No stranger to prisons, Gandhi, along with the entire leadership of the Congress party, was incarcerated in 1942 for the duration of World War II after demanding an immediate end to British colonial rule in return for Indian support of the war against Japan. "The allies have no moral cause for which they are fighting, so long as they are carrying this double sin on their shoulders, the sin of India's subjection and the subjection of the Negroes and African races," Gandhi argued.
