Defendant Phelps says that he carries out protests at the funerals of slain sodliers in order to call atention to what he says is America's "heathen society." Attorneys General from 48 states and the District of Columbia have sided with the plaintiff, Albert Snyder, the father of Matthew Snyder, a Marine killed in Iraq, while the ACLU and news organizations like the Associated Press and The New York Times, have sided with Phelps.
