An Eritrean artillery unit fires at Ethiopian positions near Ede Della, Eritrea, 85 miles south of the capital, Asmara, on May 30, 2000. The two famine-ravaged nations spent two years and millions of dollars in a border dispute over a 650-mile stretch of desert, and finally signed a peace treaty in December after Ethiopia occupied large sections of Eritrea.
