Americans seemed to rediscover their love for their flag in the days and weeks after Sept. 11 as the nation burst out in a show of patriotism not seen since WWII. Stores sold out of them; newspapers printed pull-out versions; businesses made the red, white and blue part of every window display. On t-shirts and lapels, on bridges and over doorways, America's grand old flag suddenly became its most ubiquitous decoration and its renewed symbol of unity.
