The steady build-up of tension between anti-globalization protesters and the authorities responsible for protecting international summit reached boiling point at the Genoa summit of the G-8. An Italian protester was shot dead by police and hundreds of others were beaten as the government tried to prevent leftist and anarchist groups from disrupting discussions among leaders of the world's industrialized powers.
