Racial Tensions
Despite his successes as an administrator and politician, the elder Daley's Chicago remained plagued by racial strife throughout his decades in power. A 1965 protest against delays in integrating the schools was met by pro-Daley counterprotesters, above, while the killing of Martin Luther King Jr. three years later was followed by three days of rioting, during which 11 blacks were killed. Daley was shocked, claiming that he "never believed that this would happen here."
