Despite the gains of the last few years, many analysts warn that much work remains to be done: pockets of the insurgency are still operational, the country remains split by deep ethnic and sectarian tensions and the government is weak and far from stable. "The Iraq war is not over and it is not won," says Anthony Cordesman of the Center for International and Strategic Studies. In his view, it could take another decade for Iraq to become stable.
