Landslides buried Zhouqu, in northwestern China, in more than 22 feet of rock and earth after torrential rain began to fall on Aug. 7, 2010. Early on, rescue efforts were hampered because the ground was too soft and unstable for machinery, forcing workers to use shovels, hoes and their own hands to dig out survivors.
