Sami Raimi tapped an all-star cast for the western, including DiCaprio, Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone and a pre-superstar Russell Crowe. Stone and the director, whose credits include The Evil Dead, Darkman, A Simple Plan and the Spider-Man franchise, liked DiCaprio for his part in the film so much, that he was cast over the studio's objection with Stone agreeing to pay for the young star's fee out of her own pocket.
