Though Stonehenge was more than a thousand years in the making, its initial purpose remains shrouded in mystery. Cremated remains have been found there, but the site clearly served other purposes as well. On the solstice, to a person standing in the center of the circle, the sun rises precisely over a "heel stone" situated directly northeast of the entrance arch, suggesting that the circle served as a kind of observatory or calendar.
