Born in Los Angeles' Chinatown, Wong Liu Tsong (the name means, "Yellow Frosted Willow") was a third-generation Chinese-American. The second of six children by Wong Sam Sing, the owner of a local laundry, and his second wife, Lee Gon Toy, the aspiring actress would later anglicize her name by adopting the stage name Anna May Wong.
