The Career of Anna May Wong
Everett
Piccadilly, 1929
Unsatisfied with the opportunities that Hollywood offered her, in 1928 Wong would move to Europe in search of greener pastures. Overseas, she demonstrated her mastery of English, French and German in both a European talkie (sound in films was slowly gaining traction) and live on stage. Her performance in Piccadilly, her last silent film, was of particular note. TIME's Richard Corliss calls it "her finest movie, her most liberated performance and one of the last gasps of silent-film greatness."
