Despite all her accolades, Anna May Wong remained a woman stuck between two worlds — she was too Chinese for Hollywood and too American for China. In Hollywood, Caucasian actresses would be awarded the roles of Chinese characters over her, while a standing convention forbade her from kissing the leading man on film. In China, she was resented for her sexually charged roles; at one point, a Shanghai newspaper even branded her a "traitor to China". Wong said, "It's a pretty sad situation to be rejected by the Chinese because I am too American."
