Among the first to arrive on the kindie scene, the popular former rock-'n'-roller for grownups got her break after playing birthday parties for the offspring of Sting and Madonna, and her DVDs have shown up in Starbucks and even made the Billboard charts. "I used to worry 'cause my band friends thought it was a little, um, uncool, to make music for kids," says Berkner, whose "Best Of" CD is due out in June. "But there's something very playful and fun and direct about writing for kids, and if you can do it intelligently, it's become a really respectable way to make music."
