Chicago, 1893: Ferris' Wheel
Although Christopher Columbus never set foot in the Windy City, the World's Columbian Exposition was held in Chicago to mark the 400th anniversary of his arrival in the New World. The expo was notable for being the debut of the Ferris wheel. Designed and built by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr., the wheel measured 804 m (264 feet) tall and held 36 cars that accommodated up to 60 people each.
