The Stooges, Then
Formed in Michigan in the late 1960s by James Newell Osterberg, a.k.a. Iggy Pop, the Stooges forged a raw, primitive sound that completely redefined what blues music could do. Pop gained fame as a wildly outrageous performer, willing to cut himself with shards of glass or smear food on his bare chest. He is often credited with the popularization of stage diving. The band underwent numerous personnel changes over the years, but the original line up was, from left, Scott Asheton, his brother Ron, Dave Alexander and Pop.
