Abba, Then
Founded in Sweden in the early 1970s, Abba burst onto the international stage by winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with the upbeat "Waterloo." The band continued to dominate world pop charts during the 1970s and early '80s with hits like "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance on Me" and "Fernando." The first pop group from mainland Europe to find a large audience in the U.S. as well as the U.K., Abba has sold 370 million records to date. The name is an acronym formed from the first letters of their first names. In the photo above, taken during the Eurovision competition, they are, from left, Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Faltskog and Bjorn Ulvaeus.
