Robert Maass / Corbis
Honored
Despite his fall from grace in Russia, Gorbachev remained popular in Europe and the U.S., where he was credited with helping to end the Cold War and break down the divide between East and West. In 1990, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "his leading role in the peace process which today characterizes important parts of the international community," and at the end of that same year, he was selected as TIME's Man of the Decade.
