Medical personnel almost immediately tried to resuscitate Kumaritashvili. He was rushed to a local hospital and soon after declared dead. He was 21 years old and the 44th-ranked luger in the world. The accident was his second wipeout at the track. There had been reportedly been about a dozen others during the week's practices.
